27 October 2004, 12:54 Firefox OSX Safari-look

Safari theme for FireFox 0.1

After reading two articles by Jon Hicks (1) “Safari style tabs for Firefox OS X” and (2) “Native (looking) Firefox OSX widgets”, I decided to take his ideas to the next level and create a theme for Firefox OSX to make it look like a native OSX application.

The problem was to change the form elements to make them look native OSX. After days of tring to add the form elements widjets to the theme—I gave up and used Kevin Gerich’s solution.

To install the theme, just click here (you may need to tell Firefox to allow themes to be installed from this website). Then, restart your browser and you’re done.

PC USERS – BEWARE! – THIS THEME WORK ONLY WITH MAC OS-X!

If you’d like to have a go at implementing the form elements widjets as well, you can download all the images and css here.

Instructions:

Use it at your own risk!

gravatar Nooon / Nov 10, 10:00 PM Would it be possible to make the forward- and back-buttons stick together, Safari-style? I’ve seen themes that does this, but none of them work on OS X.. #
gravatar davedit / Nov 10, 11:04 PM First and foremost this is great stuff, thanks much!

3 quick comments :)

1) I think you need a little more space on the left side of the Google bar. If you don’t have the Go button seperating the URL and Google bar, the Google bar will overlap the URL bar. :-O

2) I think it’s great that you duplicated the bookmark button from Safari, but it looks a little out of place up there in my opinion. What would you think about making a custom bookmark button like you did with Downloads and History?

However, I think the current bookmarks button would be great if I could throw it in my bookmarks toolbar without increasing the thickness of it, as it currently does. Is this possible?

3) What about making the status bar the same metallic color as the toolbars. Is this possible as well?

Thanks again for the great theme :) #

gravatar Tom / Nov 10, 11:08 PM by the way, this might crash firefox on other OS’s (dont ask how I just found that out)

Good old safemode will save the day! #

gravatar Ran / Nov 11, 10:46 AM This is still a work in progress. I will continue to try making the changes some of you suggested.

I wasn’t able to find a way to have the bookmarks button on the bookmarks toolbar without changing the thickness.

I am sorry, Tom, I should give a warning for PC users. #

gravatar Ian / Nov 11, 01:22 PM Hi, I just accidentally installed your theme on my work PC. As I’m sure you’re aware, this has now killed Firefox. How do I get rid of the theme? #
gravatar Ian / Nov 11, 02:27 PM Thanks Tom, safemode restored all my ills ( I wish! ). Ran, that warning for PC users would be a good idea. #
gravatar Jeremy / Nov 12, 02:52 AM I love the theme. Although I can’t seem to get the bookmarks bar and tabs to switch to the brushed metal. Has anyone else had this problem? #
gravatar Dave / Nov 12, 05:44 AM Looks like a great theme, but it doesn’t seem to work in Firefox 1.0.
Will there be an update? #

gravatar Dave / Nov 12, 06:06 AM Sorry, I did get it to work (I needed to go to the Firefox theme installation form to make it the default theme).
Very nice theme, although it does make it extra anoying that the title bar and the bookmarks/sage sidebar don’t match. #

gravatar Justin / Nov 13, 04:35 AM Maybe it’s just me, but the “Find” dialog on the bottom is HUGE on 1.0 with this theme! #
gravatar dclal / Nov 13, 09:01 PM Jeremy,

Try removing any mods from your chrome folder, if you installed any.

That worked for me. #

gravatar Daniele Ramacciotti / Nov 15, 12:35 PM Complimenti, ben fatto. #
gravatar Ran Barton / Nov 19, 04:34 PM This looks terrific, and I thank you very much for posting this theme.

I think I have the same problem as Jeremy, in that my tabs appear different than the button bar, but I have no custom chrome elements, so dclal’s suggestion doesn’t actually help me, alas.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a Mac/Aqua/Safari-ish theme that will work on my d@mn Windoze machine at work? I’d love to give it a makeover.

Thanks,
Ran #

gravatar manny007 / Nov 27, 04:09 AM the theme isnt working for put another link for another safari theme up. #
gravatar Name / Nov 28, 11:48 PM Hi.

Thank you very much for creating this theme. It’s wonderful.

On Nov 13, Justin made a comment about how the Find window opened at the bottom is huge. My guess is that this is due to a large icon used for “Match Case”. Please could you provide instructions on how to fix this, i.e. make it smaller.

Thanks. #

gravatar zyp / Dec 1, 06:01 PM i’m unable to download this in mac’s firefox. i was successfully able to download and install it on a pc, which subsequently made it crash as warned. when i click on the link on my mac – no response. any ideas? #
gravatar Sven / Dec 16, 08:05 PM Oh my god i would love to have this on my Intel PC #
gravatar Chris / Dec 16, 09:05 PM cough

Why not just use Camino ? #

gravatar aroussi / Dec 25, 08:01 PM we have the same family name…!
i want to know your origin …!
sincerly. #

gravatar Ran / Dec 26, 01:00 AM Aroussi, It’s nice to see someone with the same family name—it is not that common.

I am a 4th generation Israeli from that side of the family. Before that we originated from Spain, Greece and Yemen :) #

gravatar Todd Hammer / Dec 30, 03:10 PM Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is exactly what I have been looking for since I started using OS X a month ago! I love the look of Safari but it sadly lacks so many features I need in Firefox! For me, Safari is practically unusable as a browser. There have been other Safari-like themes but none are so easily installed as this one! I hope you continue to improve and support this theme. Thanks again! #
gravatar Ryu / Dec 31, 04:40 AM Is it just me or did you remove the link?

ps. Happy New Year! #

gravatar Ran Aroussi / Dec 31, 10:45 AM Nope. The link is up there…

Happy New Year! #

gravatar Lewis / Jan 2, 07:26 PM I like the theme, but it needs to add per-tab closing like Safari has. It is so annoying to have to bring a tab forward to close it, or rclick it and scrub the menu… #
gravatar Jon / Jan 5, 06:23 PM The link doesn’t seem to do anything for me. #
gravatar Axel / Jan 7, 11:19 AM Hi Ran,

I also have problems with the “click here” link.
I´m using Firefox version 1.0 (english version) and if i click or doubble-click NOTHING happens. (I have java script activated)
And if i do a right-click like it is suggested in the title tag “Install Safarish 1.0 (Right-click to Download)” then i can save “Install Function.html” to my drive.

So no theme available for me?

Cheers,
Axel #

gravatar Ran / Jan 7, 04:39 PM You cannot install the theme unless you are using FireFox. Other browsers will do nothing when you click the install link. #
gravatar Jon / Jan 9, 11:06 PM I have of course been trying to install while using Firefox. Unfortunately, as with others here, this does nothing. I’ve also downloaded and tried to apply safarish.jar, but nothing doing there either. Sorry to keep on about this, I just really wanna try this out. #
gravatar Thomas / Jan 20, 04:24 AM This is so sweet. However, doesn’t look as good when icons are set to small and the find feature is all out of whack. Good work though! #
gravatar Ron / Jan 20, 08:58 PM Ran,

I hope you upload this to the Firefox theme archive at Mozilla.org. I only found this by accident.

It seems that the most of the nicest Mac themes are never uploaded to the archive, while the cool ones have to be found the hard way. #

gravatar danny / Jan 24, 06:44 PM how do I download this? #
gravatar trucmuche / Jan 24, 07:26 PM For those having problems installing the theme:

-download the theme to your desktop
-rename it “safarish.xpi”
-drag and drop in a Firefox browser window

It should now have installed. Apply and restart Firefox.

Hope this helps :-) #

gravatar Mactico / Jan 24, 10:33 PM I installed Safarish in my pc, now I can`t open Firefox have this messagge:

“error launching browser window: no XBL binding for browser”
How I can resolve this problem? I already desinstalled Firefox and reinstalled it, but the error continues.

TIA #

gravatar john / Jan 25, 03:42 AM I am getting unexpected error -201 when attempting to install this theme. #
gravatar olo / Jan 25, 12:00 PM can you please please please fix the findbar height?

please? #

gravatar bob / Jan 25, 07:00 PM I agree. Are there any plans to fix the findbar? Or any ideas on how we might do it? #
gravatar olo / Jan 25, 10:38 PM i spent at least 6 hours trying to reskin another theme and/or fix this one’s findbar btw, with no success, i’ll try again tonight, but i don’t have much confidence that it’ll work #
gravatar laurie / Jan 26, 04:59 PM Great theme! You definitely should put this on mozilla.org. I found it from MacOSX Hints. One thing, though, I do not understand the icons on the right side of the find bar. Are they all associated with “Match Case”? #
gravatar Dan / Jan 27, 01:08 AM Nice work! I particularly like the print icon, which Safari inexplicably fails to offer. #
gravatar olo / Jan 30, 11:38 AM a semi fix to the navbar and searchbar interface overlap is to change the browser.css in the safarish.jar/browser folder to this

/* ::::: go button ::::: */

#go-button,
#go-container {
-moz-appearance: none;
background-color: transparent;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
min-width: 0;
list-style-image: url(“chrome://browser/skin/Go.png”);
-moz-image-region: rect(0px, 25px, 20px, 0px);
}

#go-button {
-moz-appearance: toolbarbutton;
}

#go-button:hover:active {
-moz-image-region: rect(0px, 45px, 20px, 20px);
}

#go-button[disabled=”true”] {
-moz-image-region: rect(0px, 65px, 20px, 40px);
} #

gravatar olo / Jan 30, 11:44 AM as a follow up, you will of course need to use the go button.

what i changed is the right spacing values from 20,40,60 to 25,45,65

while i’m on it, if you just create a blank, small png file and name it find.png and replace the find.png file from the jar file you get a smaller, funtional, but a little wonky and crippled findbar

i would post a package of this, but i’d rather have Ran make these corrections and take credit for and post a new version #

gravatar Ran / Jan 30, 11:53 AM Thank you olo for your help :)

I plan to launch my new site an about a week and I will include your corrections – but credit will be yours!

Thanks again. #

gravatar olo / Jan 30, 11:57 AM oh and sorry to spam your board, but i found that deleting the find.png altogether looks better, but you of course lose all the graphics from the find.png

it is fully functional this way and everything works but the “close the findbar” button which has no gui or hover behavior, but still works if you click where it was #

gravatar TwisterMc / Feb 10, 04:27 AM Has it been updated lately? Just checking. #
gravatar Ant / Feb 11, 09:19 PM Hi
is there this nice theme fot Thunderbird too?
Ciao #

gravatar Muerte / Feb 16, 04:04 AM Any news? :) I’m very interested in this. #
gravatar Malex / Feb 19, 06:39 PM Hi, I cliced and install it on my pc without reading the “PC beware”, now I have to use internet explorer, I can’t use firefox anymore , I uninstall and install and still won’t open. how can I do ? #
gravatar Panphage / Feb 23, 11:16 AM Love this theme!

Two things:
Just wanted to second that the search bar is absolutely wrecked. The “close” button (? that’s what it does, anyway) is just weird, and then there’s a bunch of stuff labelled “Match case” that makes the entire thing stretch to like 200px tall.

Also, is there any way to get the forward and back buttons to snuggle? #

gravatar Bernd / Feb 23, 09:51 PM YOU made my day! At work id have to deal with Windows 2000, but firefox is default! On my imacG5 i like safari. But hands down, it simply lacks functionality. Firefox looking like safri, damn yeah. Just got myself Scrapbook andy saved myself 80$ on “Webstractor” with the help of Firefox. G5 Users be sure to get yourself a g5 optimized build!!!

PS: Real nifty layout. Using Textpattern?

Big big thx, man. #

gravatar Bernd / Feb 23, 09:56 PM CTRL + F >>> looks nasty! Panphage you’re right. Please fix this one. #
gravatar Dan K / Feb 24, 09:02 AM To everyone who tried to install this on PC and crashed Firefox (you don’t have to reinstall or even go to Safe Mode):

Go to your C:Documents and Settings”Your Username”Application DataMozillaFirefoxProfiles”Randomtext”.defaultextensions folder

Open the file “Installed Extensions.txt” and delete the folder listed in the text file. Then delete “Installed Extensions.txt”. You will have preserved all of your other custom edits without reinstalling firefox. Cheers. #

gravatar eric / Feb 24, 07:48 PM How do i uninstall this from linux? Ive tried everything. Deleted firefox and re-installed, deleted .mozilla directory, searched for safarish.jar, and no matter what i do, this still gives me the no XBL browser error. #
gravatar Dan K / Feb 24, 10:41 PM Not a linux user myself, but you need to find where Firefox installs its plugins (not in the default Firefox folder). It keeps all plugins/themes/customizations there so you don’t have to reinstall them if you reinstall firefox. It is in a user-specific folder, not a global folder. Don’t look for safarish.jar because it doesn’t exist after you install the theme. Instead look for “Installed Extensions.txt” or something like it. Hope this helps. #
gravatar Dirk Breidenbach / Feb 25, 02:13 PM it is possible to get the FireFox/Safari-Icon? Thanks #
gravatar eric / Feb 25, 08:32 PM Dan K, thanks for your help.
I actually had to log in as root, and go to my usr/lib/directory and delete the extensions in there since i had installed firefox from the RPM. this fixed my problem and i just re-installed and it works now! thanks for the help #

gravatar Chris / Mar 15, 10:30 AM I am very happy with this theme until I found that the findbar is too ugly! I am not going to use it until it’s get fixed. #
gravatar Chad / Mar 16, 07:59 PM Ok, here’s a few fixes I came up with, probably not done properly but they do the trick for now.

Find (or create) the userChrome.css file in your firefox profile directory and add the following:

To get rid of the drop down arrows on forward/backwards buttons:

.toolbarbutton-menubutton-dropmarker {
list-style-image: none !important;
}

To fix the find toolbar, add:

.checkbox-icon {
display: none !important;
}

#FindToolbar > toolbarbutton > .toolbarbutton-icon {
list-style-image: url(“chrome://global/skin/icons/closetab.png”) !important;

}

That should do it. The status bar still need to be metal but I’m not that bored… The back and forward buttons should be touching. I actually started trying to do this same thing a while back but I gave up because there is no way to get the window bar to be metal with firefox… Ah well, better than nothing.

Oh, I have a modified version of TabX that will work with this theme (gives you close tab buttons on each tab, like safari). It can be grabbed at http://www.gnarfle.com/tabxmac.xpi #

gravatar max / Apr 3, 02:25 PM Really cool, i was looking for this for long time, now i can use firefox as defaut browser on my mac :)
Thanks a lot !!! #

gravatar M- / Apr 5, 11:12 AM Very nice, just what I was looking for. Thanks ;-) #
gravatar erlend / Apr 8, 03:37 AM yeah, this looks great. chad; your improvements worked fine. the history-buttons next to the back and forward browser buttons are gone and the find menu at the bottom is the right size again, after i used your userchrome.css improvements.

i have some suggestions for further improvements, though, but these are all minor details:

1. each tab doesn’t have their own close button. and TabX doesn’t work with OS X (right, chad?).

2. status bar isn’t brushed metal.

3. the find bar (apple+f) at the bottom looks great (with chads userchrome.ccs, as i said), but the button all the way to the left, which closes the damn thing, still looks like shit.

but, hey, it’s a fantastick theme. my compliments. #

gravatar erlend / Apr 8, 03:52 AM ah… got it. the regular tabx doesn’t work with os x, but chad’s modified version does! just installed it. great work, chad!

so then there’s only numbers 2 and 3 to go in the improvements list above…

(and btw; i am aware of the fact that fantastic isn’t spelled fantastick. the mistake is already haunting me.) #

gravatar Kevin / Apr 15, 06:40 PM Don’t know if it’s already been requested, so an inital/additional vote for Windoze support is hereby placed #
gravatar David / Apr 16, 03:10 PM PC USERS, and Dan K, thanks Dan, but your tip for fixing crashed PC-foxes didn’t work.
The extensionfolder namned in “installed-extensions.txt” was not the Safarish one, and did not help deleting.
Instead the last added folder seemed to be the one, containing Safarish.jar, though taking this away made Firefox start, it now seems to lack a theme at all. Buttons, menus, everything is unstructured text.
Clues?
(And a note to Aroussi, please put “PC-aware sign BEFORE the CLICK HERE sign”, just take it for granted that there are happy and stressed people like me clicking to fast on stuff.) #

gravatar Roy Schestowitz / Apr 16, 06:55 PM I was reluctant to upgrade Firefox in Linux. I tried your theme, which killed Firefox and motivated me to upgrade, so it turned out OK. #
gravatar David / Apr 17, 08:17 PM Hmm, upgrading didn’t work for me either. Still a mess :( #
gravatar parker / Apr 19, 04:55 PM yup im a retard, i tried to install it on windows, and if i had read i would have realized. Firefox now doesnst work, saying no XLB bind or somehting like that, anyone know what to do? iv tried uninstalling but nada.

thanks in advanced
parker #

gravatar matt / Apr 25, 10:24 PM Doh…I too have installed it on my PC,all my setting are scrambled…i have tried reinstalling firefox still no Joy. #
gravatar Chhc / Apr 27, 06:31 PM Thank you for the theme, it’s the best!! And I was missing the tabX extension ever since I had moved from windows so now I am a lot happier!!
I know this has already been suggested, but since this is the best theme, I will ask again: is there any plan to have this theme designed for Thunderbird? Then I’d be in heaven.. #

gravatar das7282 / Apr 29, 04:39 AM Where are the little “radio” symbols for RSS bookmarks? #
gravatar Ping / May 1, 04:03 PM Thanks for this theme, Ran. I added a whole bunch of small tweaks in my userChrome.css file to trim down the space usage and bring the effect closer to Safari. Here are some of the changes:

1. Back and forward buttons are stuck together (though not truly combined like Safari; I kept your toolbar image).

2. Navigation buttons are all trimmed down to match Safari toolbar height.

3. Bookmark button is narrower so it can be placed on the bookmark bar while leaving the bookmark bar the correct height.

4. Dividing line between the navigation bar and bookmarks bar is a groove, like the one in Safari.

5. Spacing of the items on the bookmark bar reduced to match Safari.

6. No dividing line between the navigation bar and the tabs.

7. Fixed vertical dividing lines between tabs to match Safari.

8. Dark line separates the tool area from the document (you’d be surprised what a huge difference one pixel makes—it’s all about the visual separation of the browser from the page).

9. Dark line separates the Find toolbar from the document.

10. Proper groove along the top of the status bar, like Safari.

11. Most of the status bar has a brushed-steel background, like Safari.

Get the stylesheet here.

I hope this helps (and I hope you see fit to incorporate these changes into your theme).

I can’t get brushed steel behind the progress bar, unfortunately. Anyone know why? #

gravatar erlend / May 3, 06:12 PM Ping, just wanted to say that your stylesheet was great, truly excellent. Thanks! #
gravatar Chad / May 3, 10:12 PM Well, anyone looking at this might want to check out the brushed theme here

It’s a bit more polished and complete. Don’t forget my mac port of TabX to complete it :) #

gravatar spooky / Jun 10, 06:32 AM Hi Ran. Can you develop a PC ver. of this one for PC users?
I’m very disappointed I found the notice. #

gravatar ranh / Jun 14, 01:36 AM This may be a bit of an impolite post, but I guess the author would like to see this as well – Safari-ized brushed metal and other Aquatic themes for Firefox 1.0 and 1.1:

GrApple – Aronnax`s Firefox Themes

They work flawlessly, but only on OS X. #

gravatar dteichman / Jun 25, 04:24 PM For those PC users out there who made my mistake, you need to go into C:Documents and SettingsUsernameApplication DataMozillaFirefoxProfilesYour ProfileExtensionsExtensions.rdf and remove all entries for Safarish.

It will probably send your bookmarks to hell. #

gravatar Randy / Jul 29, 07:55 AM Fantastic theme! Thank you. #
gravatar Claire / Jul 30, 09:50 AM Hi I would love to use it but I must be being really stupid just downloaded firefox to install but it wont work I got it from the main site and its called download,mozilla.org please can anyone help #
gravatar Geörg / Aug 2, 08:05 PM SUGGESTION TO THE DEVELOPER!!!

PUT A BIG SIGN BEFORE THE DOWNLOAD LINK!!!

For those who had installed this theme on a PC with Windows…
Go to:
C:Documents and SettingsUSERApplication DataMozillaFirefoxProfilesudggu2oc.defaultextensions

There you will find folders like {74990d77-1cea-11d9-8197-000d93327bd2}

In my case that was the Safarish folder, I move it to another directory and restarted Firefox (is restarts with a default theme) try to change the theme (it maybe that the options are in black, anyway they work).
One you have switched to an stable theme, unistall safarish.

Hope works for everyone. #

gravatar Jonathan / Aug 11, 05:50 AM This is awesome.

But, it seems to have messed up my incremental “find” panel. It’s become huge, taking up way too much screen space, and including all these icons I don’t know where they came from. What happened?

Plus, I can’t figure out how to put bookmarks in the on screen ‘bookmark bar’. Maybe this is a stupid Firefox question. What am I missing? #

gravatar Jonathan / Aug 11, 06:20 AM Ah, okay, read all the other comments, see I’m not the only one with the huge findbar problem. I’ll try the fixes suggested here (I haven’t messed with Firefox hacks like this before, have to figure out how to follow those instructions). Figured out my stupid ‘bookmark toolbar’ issue.

But: Now, from the comments, I’m intrigued by Chad’s supposed OSX port of TabX. I REALLY want that. But… it doesn’t seem to install properly on my Firefox 1.0. “”Tab X Mac” could not be installed because of an error in its Install Manifest (“tabx” is not a valid GUID). Please contact the author of this item about the problem.”

Not sure how to contact this mythical Chad… #

gravatar nj / Sep 12, 09:59 AM there is another safari theme available for firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/themes/moreinfo.php?id=792

its find/incremental search looks good ;) #

gravatar Ryan / Sep 13, 03:04 PM I can’t believe this. Is there NO way to EVER run Firefox on this computer again? I saw your warning, which is BELOW the link and doesn’t mention it’ll render Firefox useless, AFTER I installed it. I tried deleting the folder with this theme in it, and that allowed me to open Firefox, but it’s themeless, and I don’t know how to select a stable theme when the list of themes is nothing but white. PLEASE HELP! #
gravatar bigmac / Oct 22, 12:19 AM Why on earth would any Mac user in their right mind be using firefox for their browser instead of Safari ?

Safari is without a doubt the best browser in the world, firefox isn’t even half the browser Safari is.

You people disappoint me, what a disgrace lol

No matter what the theme, firefox will never duplicate Safari.

I’m ashamed to even have stumpled upon this website #

gravatar d / Nov 26, 07:52 AM

If you just edit (replace the “find.png” in the .jar, you should be fine. Just crop the existing png. I cropped it to only have the upper left button of the original group of buttons. It looks like its supposed to now. Thanks olo for the idea. ( : This way you dont lose the button that should really be there.

I had great Lynchknot Re-evolution theme on my ff1.0.7 but this theme will not work on ff1.5 and i`m very sad :((

Until then, I’m stuck with Safari…

gravatar Bob Dobolina / Dec 30, 08:28 PM

For those who care: I suspect the XBL binding error at launch is related to an old or incompatible theme. Try updating or uninstalling your themes.

Well, not really two months, but as soon as i remember the two weeks started about five weeks ago ;-)

Let’s hope that Ran will release Safarish for FF 1.5 soon, because it’s a really great theme! All other mac-like Firefox themes i know are just half as good in my opinion …

Dear Ran,

are you still going to make a Safarish update for Firefox 1.5 or will it come no more?

Please…

Best regards,
N.

Now it’s about 6 months – the longest “2 weeks” i’ve ever spent waiting for an update :-/

Dear Ran, just one word, please:

Yes or no?

Are you still going to give us a Safarish update or not?

Please…

Thanks.

Very cool but when will it be ready for the 2.0 version?

Obviously it will never get ready for the 2.0 (or 2.x or 3.x or 4.x or 5.x) version.

Safarish is dead.

RIP
